Smitty is the overarching antagonist of the 1941 animated film Dumbo.
He is a dim witted, jerkish boy who made fun of Dumbo's ears, angering the latter's mother to the point of grabbing the bully when he attempted to flee the scene, before being spanked by her and causing her to be imprisoned, leading to the main events of the film.
He was voiced by the late Malcolm Hutton.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?
- Him making fun of Jumbo Jr. for his appearance, with him even going as far as pulling on his ears and dragging him along the dirt, is portrayed in a more serious tone even compared to the circus elephants, as he is basically mocking a baby elephant over his disability, just like them, and he physically abuses Jumbo Jr., which even the quartet of elephant bullies never did once. When he does this physical abuse, Mrs. Jumbo is in shock, and she proceeds to attack him and his friends.
- Mrs. Jumbo being taken away as a result of this is also portrayed negatively.
- He was meant to be portrayed as being hypocritical for mocking Jumbo Jr's large ears, as he was designed with large ears himself. That being said, even though kids obviously laughed at his ears too if they laughed at Jumbo Jr. and he wanted an excuse to take it out on a defenseless baby animal, it's hardly played for sympathy and is only vaguely implied anyway And even if it were true, he could have been better off sympathizing with Jumbo Jr. and become friends with him, which he did not do. Him getting pelted by a haystack is hardly sympathetic either as it is karma he completely deserved.
- He (and the same would go for the other children) doesn't think what he's doing is wrong, on the contrary, judging by the dialogues where the children complain that Mrs. Jumbo practically does what any good mother does with her son, take him away from his bullies, and when Smitty pulls his ears to blow them the other children support him, as if it were okay to do that to a baby elephant (And surely with a human it would be even worse) the worst is when he asks Mrs. Jumbo "What's your problem?!", when she was doing what their mothers would surely do in their places, showing how evil and sociopathic they can be.
